Election of Chairman and Town Mayor

At its Annual Council Meeting held on Tuesday 16 May 2017, Horley Town Council re-elected Cllr Mike George as the Chairman & Town Mayor for 2017/2018.  Cllr Kevin Etheridge, pictured, was also elected as Vice Chairman and Deputy Town Mayor.

Cllr George said that “… it is a great privilege to lead this council for another year and I hope to build on the excellent work of my predecessor, Richard Olliver.  It is my intention to continue to make the council as open and accessible whenever possible to all the residents of Horley. The Kent Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance will continue to be my preferred charity.”

Cllr Mike George (Residents’ Association) has lived in Horley for 48 years with his wife, Sue, and has 1 daughter and 2 sons.  He has worked in the airline industry for many years and has served previously as Chairman of the Planning Committee for several years.

At the first meeting of the new municipal year, all members were elected onto the main Committees.  Committee Chairmen will be elected later at their respective Committee meetings. The schedule of Council meetings is available here.

Annual Report 2016/17

Horley Town Council has issued its Annual Report for 2016/2017. The report provides an insight into the council’s business and activities over the past municipal year. The report incorporates all the statutory reports made by the Town Council’s Committee Chairmen which were presented at the Annual Town Meeting on 28 April 2017. A variety of information and statistics is available including a look back over the significant events of the previous year, information on all our Town Awards holders, financial statistics and an analysis of attendances by councillors at meetings.

Horley Conservation Group Spring 2017

A new year has begun and nature has all of a sudden burst into life. This has meant that the members of the HCG have had to do much the same!!

The year started with Rhododendron and undergrowth clearance in Langshott Woods followed by some thinning of Hawthorn at Riverside Garden Park.  Tanyard pond saw the willows coppiced and the invertebrate shelters enhanced. Then at the end of March the group embarked on a study day, learning how to monitor water quality in our local streams. The idea is to embrace water quality monitoring within our local task calendar and to feed the information received into a national database. The first river monitoring was performed above and below the Thames water plant on the Burstow Stream in April and this was followed by a further survey in May. This time the survey point was just above the Thames water plant.

The picture show members of the group analyzing the sampled invertebrates as part of the river monitoring process.

Annual Town Meeting

At the Horley Town Meeting held on Friday, 28 April 2017, members of the public received various reports from the Council. Other topics for discussion included Smith’s Charity, The Cyril Edmonds Fund, Annual Reports from the Town Council’s Chairman and Committee Chairmen. Presentations were made to winners of Court Lodge in Colour Juniors.

The Guest Speaker was Alison Addy, Head of Community Engagement at Gatwick Airport Ltd, who gave an interesting talk on the work of the airport.  An update on Gatwick Airport is available here.  A lively discussion followed regarding the current operation of Route 4.  Andy Sinclair, Head of Airspace Strategy & Engagement, answered questions on this particular topic.

At the end of the meeting the following resolution was approved "that the Town Council should lobby the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to reverse its current position, and return Gatwick departure Route 4 (whether using new or conventional navigation technology) to the geographical position and dispersal pattern it occupied prior to 2013."  The resolution was later considered at the Annual Council Meeting on 16 May.  Representations have since been made to the CAA and the Dept for Transport.
